Math Pacing Guides
Re: Kindergarten Pacing Guide
Kindergarten teachers,
Due to a change in the math adoption, the pacing guide, assessment notebook and report card had to be updated. A team met in April to revise the pacing guide. A group of your peers created a weekly format, rather than designing the pacing guide in three week segments. In the past, the pacing guide did not follow the order of the text. The new pacing guide does follow the order of the topics in the math series. The team decided this would be an easier format for teachers. In addition, the topics seem to have a logical sequence.
You will notice Topic 15, Calendar Skills, is not included in the pacing guide and is taught separately. Most of these skills are taught daily at calendar time in a typical kindergarten classroom. By omitting these skills from the daily lessons, the teacher will be allowed to have a week at the end of each grading period to focus on re-teaching and assessments. This is true for all periods, except the third. The calendar skills should be assessed at this time, as well. If you look at the weeks and how they fall on the calendar, you will notice there is extra time at the end of the year. It may be more feasible to move subtraction into the last nine weeks. This is where it is assessed, because it is taught the 9th week of the third grading period.

Practice these skills the entire year at calendar time, but assess the third nine weeks:
CFU 0006.1.5 Recognize a calendar as a way of measuring time.
CFU 0006.1.3 Use words to describe time (e.g. day, night, afternoon, yesterday, today, tomorrow).
CFU 0006.1.7 Use words to describe temperature (e.g., hot, warm, cool, cold).
CFU 0006.1.8 Recognize a thermometer as a way of measuring temperature.
CFU 0006.1.9 Use age-appropriate books, stories, and videos to convey ideas of mathematics.
CFU 0006.3.5 Describe change in attributes according to qualitative criteria such as longer/shorter, colder/warmer, heavier/lighter.

The 2nd Grade Pacing Guide Team used the text’s suggested pacing to place the Topics into the guide. However, multiplication was placed in the first nine weeks because if teachers wait until Topic 19 is taught to introduce it, multiplication would not be covered before achievement testing.
With the exception of multiplication, standards that are red and/or italicized are standards that are not covered in the math text and must be supplemented by the teacher.
